If you haven’t heard, I am here to tell you we have some thrilling activities happening in the kids and youth program at Berean! Be warned, I am going to be using many exclamation points in this article because I can’t contain my enthusiasm (nor do I want to)!!

Activities

Wednesday night and Sunday morning are not the only times we like to get together as one big church family at Berean.  Once a month we come together on family nights to fellowship with one another while doing different activities.  Last month we played board games and on February 27th at 6:00 pm we will be doing a family movie night in the auditorium (of course snacks are included)! I don’t have the whole year planned so you will have to check the calendar for upcoming events.  I am always looking for new ways to fellowship so if you have any ideas, please contact me!

PAW’s

First, let me give you a little background on how worship works for the kids in our church.  Over the past few years we have taken all children pre-k through 5th grade to the fellowship area for kids worship.  We had a very young group so this worked out marvelously.  However, as they tend to do, the kids started getting older.  We now have a larger class of 3rd-5th graders who didn’t really enjoy singing and playing games with the pre-k children.  So, we changed the program.  The older students now go to adult worship and then are released to class after worship is over.  This serves multiple purposes: 1) It allows the child to experience adult church before being transitioned there in the sixth grade, 2) They don’t have to play “Doggy, Doggy, Where’s Your Bone” with the little kids, and most importantly 3) It allows them to hear communion meditations which make them think deeper about what Jesus’s sacrifice means.  Now, of course there are other important things they get out of being in the sanctuary during adult worship, but you get the idea.

With all that in mind, we wanted there to be something to help these children with the transition.  That is where PAW’s come into play!  These Preteen Auditorium Worksheets (PAW’s) are designed to help our 3rd-5th grade students grasp a deeper understanding about what is going on around them.  It is a worksheet of 5 questions which asks things like “Who is giving the communion meditation?”, “What is something that was talked about during the communion meditation?” and “What is one event coming up that you would want your family to go to?” Students fill out these worksheets and once 5 PAW’s are completed the student receives a reward of their choice (No, we don’t give out I-Pad tablets.  The kids have already asked.) If you have a kid, know a kid, or are a kid in grades 3-5 come join us and fill out a PAW!

Kid’s Connect

As you may or may not know, quarterly we send out a publication called “Berean Connect”.  In it, we have numerous articles from members of our church that give us another way to stay connected to one another.  In this publication, there is a kid’s section but I have found that little to none of the kids actually read it! In order to fix this, we have made a special Kid’s Edition Connect that will come out monthly.  In it we put pictures from past events, a memory verse for all ages, a calendar that has birthdays and events and (my favorite) an article written by one of our students! Our students are thrilled to be writing about people they have interviewed from our church, what they did on their spring break, special church events and many other topics.  Below is a link to this newsletter, CHECK IT OUT! It is awesome.
